Happy Halloween!

Last night I saw a tiny witch running away from a small scary skeleton. I got a text message from a devil and a vampire. Staffan Forssberg sent me a pumpkin drawing and I spotted a real life pumpkin carved by a little girl named Kajsa. These are my halloween observations. I am off to a book party. Maybe I should dress up? At least put on a tiara.

ONE good thing about winter / EN bra sak med vintern

The only good thing (well, apart from the fact that my exhibition in Stockholm is drawing near - November 20 - I digress) is that I can finally wear one of my favourite dresses again. It's a really warm one made from some kind of fleece. I just remembered it today and was like: helloooo little dress!

Two new accessories: gloves with bows and a vintage hair clip!

Yesterday I put the gloves through an automatic car wash and was pleased to see that they stayed intact after all that brushing and polishing. Here's a cleaning tip for you (no, do not put other things than your car in a car wash): if you think your radiators are clean, or if you don't clean them at all, try letting a pair of new, black gloves dry on them and see if they're still black afterwards.

Hungry little ones and lessons about swans / Hungriga små och lärdomar om svanar

Lessons about swans:
1. Wear socks in advance in case you need to run outside to photograph swans.
2. When you run toward swans, they swim away from you.
3. When you run toward swans and they swim away from you, they also bark.

Lärdomar om svanar:

Stockholm

A couple of days ago I went to Stockholm to check out the gallery where I'll be exhibiting soon. The location is brilliant, an old building near this square in Stockholm's Old Town, and the rooms looked great even though they're not finished yet.

This made me realise just now that my solo exhibit will be the first one in this specific gallery! I'm really excited.

Another view of the Old Town. / En annan bild från Gamla stan.

It's just a few weeks until the opening so I'll get busy soon. Tomorrow. Had a really nice and relaxing weekend filled with family and fika; much needed after a lot of work.
I morgon.

Halloween giveaway - last chance / Halloweentävling - sista chansen

3 lucky winners will receive their favourite print from my shop (not from the Halloween post itself; those are not for sale). Winners will be drawn tomorrow, not today like I stated earlier. Why do I always do this? I'm late, I'm late! Good news is that you can still be at my party - which is right here, yay! - and enter the giveaway if you'd like :)

You don't say no to fika / Man säger inte nej till fika

This evening I received an e-mail from someone asking me if we could go out for fika... or perhaps it was too late... then again, maybe not? Of course not, I said; the café closes at 8 and it's just 7.20. So I hurried, didn't find my socks, put on rubber boots, ran through the rain to my car which I ugly parked, ran to the café with bizarre hair. And I documented it all with rainy mobile pics which disappeared on their way into the computer. Anyway; a really nice evening with 21 minute fika which totally cheered me up. You know who you are, blog reader.

Interview with Vanessa Valencia, artist and creator of magic at A Fanciful Twist

I'm glad to present this interview with Vanessa Valencia - artist, storyteller and creator of magical worlds. Most of you are probably familiar with her work and know that she organises a fabulous tea party and a halloween party each year.
[Swedish translation / Svensk översättning, klicka här.]

Avant Garden Wonderland - A Tea Party

Have you always created art? When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

I loved to draw when I was a little girl. But, it wasn’t until I was 11 years old, when my parents let me paint my furniture and my walls in my room, that I knew I had tapped into something amazing. Painting opened a door into another world for me. When I would paint, I felt like I was escaping into another place in time, and I knew from then on that painting was a part of my path….

That it was part of my being.

I am curious about how you work. Do you prefer to work on canvas, paper or something else?

I love to paint on canvas and wood, and I love to work with clay. Although, depending on my mood, I am open to any creative medium really.

Winnifred Bidelia Enchantine - Witch of the Fairytale Forest

Do you start out with a clear idea of what you want to do; do you work on one piece until it's finished or can you leave it and come back to it later?

The way I work is that, an idea comes to me, and I hold it in my thoughts for a long time. Then one day I start to paint, and it usually all pours out of me at once. I usually finish pieces within a few days. If I take a break from painting a piece for too long, I forget about it and it goes into my vault of unfinished pieces. I don’t do that very often though.

I usually finish a piece from start to end, within a week or less. Sometimes I work on 3 to 5 pieces at a time.

As an example, I had a vision in my mind for 4 years, and recently started bringing it to life. It wasn’t that I was thinking things out. It was that, the spark to that piece had to ignite itself. And when it did, it came to life quite quickly.
In the Theater of Dreams

You have created a world of your own in your art – and in your online presence. What I find interesting is that many of the subjects in your paintings seem to be in their own worlds as well – floating, dancing, not looking straight at the viewer. Words like escape, enchanted and dream are often found in the titles. What role do dreams play in your work?

Good question, I had never thought about this before…
I think that dreams, and the idea of what dreams hold, plays a big role in my artwork. In dreams, anything is possible, as is in art. If you can dream it, you can create it, or so they say?

I think that perhaps many of my characters and art pieces are created as a snapshot of a moment. It is like, for a second we get a peek into another world, where say, a girl is leaping through the sky in dance, with stars floating all around her. It is sort of like watching a performance. And we are getting a moment to watch a dancer in pure bliss…

For me it creates a very intimate feeling with my pieces.

Do you create stories around the characters or do they live in their respective paintings?

They tell me their story as they come to life. I don’t think things out too much before I paint. I might have an idea in my mind for a long time, but I let the details unravel by themselves as I paint, and with that, the characters tell me their story.

The Curious Playroom

You know how brave I think you were when you opened up your homes and your studio online. How do you find a balance between being alone and creating art and being online, updating your shop, blogging and so on? (This question is from an anonymous Swedish girl who is starting to think of her computer as a body part.)

Yes, the computer becomes part of your brain, with tentacles ;)

To begin with, the balance of time, is very very difficult. It is more difficult than I ever thought it would be. I feel like I am always busy, and I feel that I have this online world that I love being a part of. And balancing creating and updating my shop, with blogging is like a juggler who doesn’t know how to juggle ;)

I do okay, but I hope to one day find a better balance. To be a full time artist, and to create art as a career, is quite intense. I quit a successful job to follow my passion. And, not being a risk taker, I eased into it. I love what I do, and I am very happy that I followed my path. Although, I never imagined that I would be working 18 hours a day. And, almost all of that time is alone time. I love spending time alone, but it is good to have some sort of creature connection during the day. If it were not for my dogs, I might go crazy. The love they share during those long hours, spent working alone, is crucial to my well being.

The thing is that, I have to be in a really special place when I create, and so, balance is super important. The amount of work it takes to run your shop and take photos, and edit them and share on your blog, and make art so you can pay your bills, is mind-blowing. But the thing is, it is so worth it, to get to do what you love. I love the blog world. It is a super special place to me.

Vanessa at the halloween party
Do you exhibit your work often? Do you ever exhibit in other countries?

I have not been in a show for the last 3 years. I strictly share my work online these days. That is the beauty of this virtual world. I really adore being able to share in this way.

I used to do shows several times a year, and travel with my work. I also exhibited in a couple of galleries when I was in my late teens to early twenties. Setting up to do shows is fun, but grueling. I might do it again in the future. But for now, virtual shows are what I love.

What is your advice to people who want to create art but don't know how to begin?

Oh, another difficult question. For me, it came naturally, however, I always tell my friends not to have a goal of what they want to create. But to first, put on their favorite music, put paint in their hands, and just go crazy on a huge canvas. I call that, painting emotions.

Painting for me is extremely cathartic. There is a sort of painting for release (going crazy with paint and creating abstract pieces), that I did every day of my life for 20 years, that I think changed me as a person. I have never ever taken an art class, but I somehow taught myself to first release emotions through art, creating pieces that you might not even show anyone. And that will lead you to find your way, to what kind of art you want to make. But first you have to make a mess, and find out who you are when it comes to painting. Are you abstract, are you detailed…..? Throw some paint around, and find out.

That is what I think :)

Thank you for letting me interview you and also for being a friend, a constant source of inspiration and magic – and for throwing the most wonderful tea parties!

Halloween Poetry 2010

Come sit with me; I will tell you a story

Gates of darkness opened in autumn
Mörkrets portar öppnades på hösten

I watched the twin ghosts play and vanish
into thin October air
Jag såg tvillingspökena leka och försvinna
i kall oktoberluft

I wanted to be your words, wrapped in paper, tucked in by the leaves

The sky no longer holds the birds; it has no wings, you have to fly
on your own

I watched the falling birds
Jag såg fåglarna falla

I wanted to be the words you wrote, wrapped inside a hidden book

Carl-Fredrik Ekström and Fredrik Lindberg, two exhibitons in Härnösand / Vernissage i morgon

Tomorrow Carl-Fredrik Ekström opens his exhibition in Härnösand. It's the first exhibition I've helped arrange with the art society; I've made the poster and also got to interview the artist for www.harnosandskonstforening.se. I got a sneek peak at the exhibition today and met Carl-Fredrik (he was really nice). His paintings are HUGE and I think the exhibition looked really good. Check out his website: www.carlfredrikekstrom.se.
Titta in på hans hemsida: www.carlfredrikekstrom.se.

Fredrik Lindberg exhibits his work in the gallery (same building), also starting tomorrow at 1 and in a completely different style. His website is here. There is also the poetry festival finale, concerts and a lot of other things happening in Härnösand tomorrow. Programme - in Swedish - here.

More personal news: Tomorrow is halloween in blogland! Visit my blog to celebrate and be creeped out at the same time. As usual, Vanessa Valencia of A Fanciful Twist hosts the party with hundreds of bloggers participating. I am running my little butt off. See you tomorrow.

TV star photos and a fun, busy week / TV-stjärnebilder och en rolig, hektisk vecka

First she brags again: I just got an e-mail from NBC about using my photographs in a TV series! It's called Outlaw. You may remember that I sold photographs to a Hollywood movie before (check my Press section above) so I'm glad American television likes my work as well :)

This week is simply magnificent. So much to do and so many good things happening: I was invited to attend a conference about culture today and tomorrow for free since I'm an ah-tist; I'm just home to grab something to eat because the soup lunch gave a new meaning to the term starving artist - they all became more pale and anaemic by the minute. But anyway, an interesting conference, two translation gigs, being asked to exhibit in Stockholm in December, a surprise opera performance in half an hour which I didn't know about - I thought dinner meant dinner and didn't sign up but in fact it meant opera directed by friends. Also exhibition which I've helped prepare this coming weekend - more info later.

Oh, and I have interviewed two artists as well this week. One is very dear to my heart and the other is a new acquaintance whose work I really like as well. Links to come later. Must dash. Now if only more weeks would be like this one :)

Oh, and this is a guy crocheting a tree at the conference. It's for amigurumi to climb. He's an arts and crafts activist, curator at the Örnsköldsvik museum (where I went to see the Andy Warhol exhibit and made buttons with my photos) and is going to teach amigurumi. I asked if he knew about this site www.etsy.com and he was like DUH! and recommented Craftzine.com to me.

A life without S / Livet utan S

For the longet time, I had perfect teeth. Then, cavitie had to be filled and one filling fell out back in March and ha caued me trouble ever ine then. The new filling imply won't hold and it will now be the ninth time I go back for the ame bloody thing. Which i why I can't ay S at the moment. I can short of shay SCH though.
Remindsh me of when I wash shix and couldn't shay S becaushe I didn't bloody have any front teeth becaushe I wash younger than the othersh in my clasch and shtill had to shee a shpeech therapisht. She showed me these shtupid drawingsh, becaushe I washn't shupposhed to be able to read, and shaid it's a ssssskata (it's a magpie), to which I replied that it wash in fact a crow and she gradually went crazhy.
I tried to avoid the letter S all day yeshterday, thinking I could see the dentisht for the ninth time about the schame thing today, but I apparently have to wait until tomorrow for them to mesh thingsh up again, the newesht filling chipped in about four plaches even though I haven't even chewed there. Gosh. At leasht I can have iche cream. Jusht don't talk to me until after tomorow. Oh, and of courshe I'm not paying every shingle time I go there but I think they ought to pay me. Nine time'sh a charm?

This autumn I'm going to exhibit in Stockholm! Details to come. There's really no excuse for you now; Stockholm is very easy to reach! :) I'm also working on a book; has to do with my mystery images, but for now, please accept these glowing leaves and the fact that I just came here to brag!
