Digital collages or photographs? / Digitala collage eller fotografier?

I've received numerous comments (very nice ones) where my images are referred to as digital collages. Not that it matters - the image itself is what matters - but nearly all of my images are either photographs or collages on paper. The butterfly series in this post, for instance; I created those images by making double and triple exposures. It raises the question though: are they photographs or collages? I ended up putting them in the Photography section of my shop since they were, in fact, made from two or three photographs put together.

What about my collages then? I often print out photographs and paint on them. Find your wings (below) has many, many layers which were all done by hand and then I scanned the collage into the computer. It's not a digital collage since I have the original, multi-layered collage out in the real world. What you see here is of course a digital collage since I scanned it and you see it on a screen, but I didn't make the collage in a computer programme.

Both of these techniques (and the secret tricks I have ;) could have been used more than 150 years ago, except the photographs would have had to be painted to add colour. Photographs have been manipulated since they were first invented and I also think that every photograph is an interpretation or manipulation, not a representation, of reality. Even the simplest single exposure is a narrow slice chosen by the photographer.

I'm not against technology at all (I sit in front of it all day) but I like the aspect of timelessness and the fact that my own creativity sets the limit. I don't have Photoshop but I am inventive with whatever materials I have at hand. What I really like about our time is of course the ability to show the entire world what I do and the fact that I can create high quality colour prints at home. And "meet" all of you! :)
