Making art accessible / Att göra konst tillgänglig

Another thing - while the exhibitions mentioned below were crowded with visitors, I can't help but think about the people who didn't go inside. The gallery is situated at the town square where there was a bit of a flea-market today and the area was rather busy.

Why is it that it's easier to browse through shops or market stands than to go into a gallery or museum? Do people in general not think it's fun, or is it that art is fancy-schmancy and so special you get intimidated? Is art scary? Is it strange and unfamiliar? What can be done about it?

For me it's so difficult for two reasons: 1.I fear being seen as someone who's "too boring"/"too snobbish" to go elsewhere. 2. I fear disappointment. Both are silly, but powerful.

And I'm watching this blog.

Interesting points. Do you fear disappointment even when there is no entrance fee, when you can just walk right in? (This was the case with the gallery I went to.)

Yes, I still do, and I know I shouldn't.

I wonder if anything can be done from the 'outside' to change this or if it has to be done by the individual?

Hi, I just came across your blog after reading some comments you left for me after stumbling across mine! I know a lot of people who have an assumption that "fine art" is inaccessible...that they don't understand it and that it's just for the "snobbish". I took some friends to a gallery show and they were like "okay, so explain this to me. what does it all mean??"...they couldn't just enjoy the work you know? Even I sort of feel intimidated around the fine arts, gallery attending crowd around town. It's almost like they're a sort of clique. I guess...maybe that's why it can feel uncomfortable. I too wonder what can be done to make art feel more accessible to the everyday person.

Oh, and great blog btw. I'll be checking back in for more. Cheers! :o)
