Swedish Christmas traditions and The Aladdin box / Svenska jultraditioner och Aladdinasken

[Svenska längre ned]

I already told you about lucia and that we celebrate Advent, the four Sundays before Christmas. We light a candle every Sunday so on Christmas four candles are lit and we also have Advent calendars. (I have a Hello Kitty chocolate one.) We celebrate on Christmas Eve, not Christmas day in Sweden (well, we celebrate the most on Christmas Eve. You know what I mean). I think this is because Santa has to travel so far; at least he has two days to visit everyone, especially if he travels from East to West considering the time difference.

Where was I, oh yes - we decorate a Christmas tree and on Christmas Eve we celebrate and a lot of people insist on eating Christmas ham even this year when terrible abuse of animals has been "revealed" (I think it's old news but to many it's new news and by now they have probably forgotten all about it). We also like to have a table full of different dishes, potato salad, bread, lots of stuff like a smörgåsbord but we call it "julbord", meaning Christmas table. Another common thing to eat is rice porridge with milk, cinnamon and sugar. You are also supposed to leave porridge outdoors for Santa the night before Christmas Eve.

At 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve, almost everyone in Sweden sits down to watch Donald Duck on TV. It's like a medley of very old Disney films and one new at the end. This often coincides with Christmas dinner and / or the opening of gifts, making Christmas Eve's afternoon a tiny bit chaotic.

Another Christmas "tradition" - or at least a very typical thing in Swedish homes around the holidays - is the Aladdin box of chocolates, pictured below. It's a box with two levels of pralines and it has been very popular at least during my entire lifetime. There is an Aladdin website and a Facebook site where you could vote to save your favourite praline because one will be changed next year. The title of the website, Rädda julen.nu, means "save Christmas.now".

This year, I got a box of Aladdin chocolate from the local grocery store as a gift. (This is not common practice but very nice, or not so nice considering how much food prices have risen even for the vegetarians.)

Still - my natural, innate response is: Yay! Chocolate! FREE chocolate! Free GOOD chocolate!
I merrily went to the grocery store, picked up my box (worth $10), came home and decided to eat it all since I was sure it would cure my cold. And I like chocolate. And I felt selfish.

Brace yourselves; here comes today's luxury problem:

I open the box, I look at the two levels of chocolate pralines, I take a look at the little description of each praline and what do I see? EVERY single praline contains nuts except four! With all the allergic people - Marabou chocolate company, what are you thinking? It hasn't been this clear to me until now when the entire box is mine, mine, MINE. Pffft! I ate my four pralines already. The rest of the box stands here staring at me in all its dangerous delicacy. And I know there are two floors of chocolate but it's a tad impolite to dig into the bottom layer (I even feel this way when I'm on my own).

Is it too late to vote?
I vote that you remove at least HALF the pralines containing nuts. Why don't you put almonds in them instead since fewer people are allergic to those. Or something.

This is of course another instance where I blatantly display my negative thinking. Sort of like when I went to Umeå, met thousands of nice people and gave massive blog attention to the one thing I did not like. I should focus on the four pralines I can eat, and be happy I'm not allergic to chocolate, but guess what? I ALREADY ATE the four pralines. Oh, and p.s., they helped a bit but were not enough to cure my cold.

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
