After the Gammlia Christmas Market. The good, the bad and the ugly... / Hemma igen efter Gammlia julmarknad. Den gode, den onde...

I had a really good time in Umeå! This was my first view of the museum area when we arrived, Friday afternoon

My mum showed me the location so I would find my way the next morning because we stayed at different places (I ended up being lost for 40 minutes, for the most part driving around in a wooded area on my own but I eventually got there) and then we had veggie burgers in the city centre

She helped arrange all my books on the table the next morning when I had finally found the museum and I ran about putting my photographs up on screens and then there were tons and tons of visitors and they were all so nice! A lot of people squealed or exclaimed "oooooh!" when they saw my books :)

I saw my posters which my sister and her friends put up all over town and also inside the museum...

Me and one of my unique and pretty notebooks / scrapbooks

As you all know, I really love what I do and my products are made by hand, with love and consideration. Many of the visitors at Gammlia wanted me to find a retail opportunity in Umeå since they liked my books and photographs so much and not everyone was carrying enough cash etc, and several people suggested I should contact a small, independent paper shop. I went there today before I headed home and unfortunately I was met with a very rude attitude. I normally do not write negative personal things but this is the way one business treated another business which I think is more of a public matter.

First I checked to see if there were any customers inside or if the owner would have time to look at my work. There was no one else inside so I went in and showed her some of the books I had left. (She liked them a lot.) As I was standing there, a customer walked in, saw my books and exclaimed "Ooooh! What do you have here?" and asked some questions about them. She asked if she could buy one right away and I said sure. Then she proceeded to buy something from the shop and left, whereupon the shop owner (who had walked away from the counter several times without any explanation) said, very abruptly, "I don't appreciate you selling your items here".

I said "oh, sorry, I just thought you would benefit from selling my books as well - as you can see, they really are of interest to customers?" I regret saying sorry and the fact that I continued to be nice and polite... I'm really quite baffled by her attitude. What should I have done - been rude to her customer?

Had it been my shop, I would probably have ordered the notebooks in question right away since they evoked instant interest. Then again, a lot of shops are quite content selling only mass produced items made by underpaid workers in countries far enough away that you don't have to worry about how the items were made. It is safe to say that I will not be buying anything more in that shop and I will not send them a price list and retail info - I really don't want that sort of negativity around my books. As I've told you before, I don't even create things when I'm in a bad mood since I want to make the best things I possibly can and feel that they deserve more than being around negative vibes...

The people of Umeå now know where to find truly unique, handmade books which are still decently priced. Simply go to my shop or e-mail me at info@afiori.com.
I later went to two other shops with very nice staff and there is a possibility that one of them is going to show my photographs at a small exhibition in their café and sell my books and photographs in the shop - fingers crossed since their boss was not in town today and I really liked those places.

I also met a really nice girl who designs edgy clothing for babies! She promptly put one of my afiori buttons on her shirt and showed me what she does. Her company is called Idagdesign and I really think she should start an Etsy shop. These designs say "A star is born" and "Kiss my a**"... Mobile phone pics taken in a shop called Popshop.

På de här kläderna står det "A star is born" och "Kiss my a**"...

To sum it up, I had fun and met thousands of nice people in Umeå. They loved my stuff and it was unusual but nice for me to be out in the real world and actually, you know, talk old school to people. In the evenings we had a birthday party for my mum, hung out in my sister's flat (below, photos by me and her) and went out for pizza at a nice restaurant.

This is me on my way home, having a lussebulle and some coffee. I shall now devote my full attention to a so-called Schmäck ball, a huge chocolate pastry thing which is delicious.
